PEEK vs. ULTEM™: Comparing High-Performance Plastics
From the different materials offered by Craftcloud® for both 3D printing and CNC machining services, PEEK (Polyetheretherketone) and ULTEM™ (Polyetherimide, or PEI) are among the top choices when high-performance polymers are needed. Which one can best address your project’s goals?

High-performance polymers generally refer to plastics that need to maintain their chemical properties when exposed to extreme heat, harsh chemicals, or intense mechanical stress. PEEK and ULTEM™ both possess exceptional thermal stability, mechanical strength, and chemical resistance, which is why they can be used as lightweight, corrosion-resistant alternatives to metals in demanding industries.
PEEK is renowned for its unmatched mechanical properties and environmental resilience. It is exceptionally resilient against high temperatures and can remain strong when exposed to up to 250 °C, in addition to boasting excellent resistance to wear, fatigue, and a wide range of aggressive chemicals, such as fuels, solvents, and acids. PEEK is also a sought-after material for medical implants and surgical instruments, given its biocompatible nature and capability to withstand repeated steam sterilization.
ULTEM™ is perhaps best known for its exceptional flame-retardant properties, as well as its dielectric strength and dimensional stability. It boasts a very high glass transition temperature – of 217 °C – and exhibits low smoke and toxic gas emissions. While ULTEM™ yields a slightly lower impact strength than PEEK, it usually comes at a more accessible price point.
Best Use Cases
PEEK could be the more suitable choice for:
- Custom cranial and orthopedic implants
- Downhole oil and gas components
- Analytical chemistry and semiconductor parts
ULTEM™ might be the better option for:
- Aerospace interior components
- Automotive connectors
- Medical equipment sterilization trays
